San Cristóbal de La Laguna

High up on the hill above Santa Cruz is the old capital of Tenerife, La Laguna. In many ways, La Laguna could have the right to call itself a capital, unlike Santa Cruz it has a cathedral, a university and an airport. They are not the only things it has on its younger sister.

La Laguna de Tenerife is the old city. Built high up atop a hill so that it couldn’t be got at by coastal raiders in times past. The city boasts some impressive views and a cooler climate atop its vantage point. Being the older sister of the two means it has more character, with pretty architecture and fascinating buildings such as the tower of Iglesias de la Concepción and La Laguna Cathedral. Being a university town, it also has the nightlife. Every weekend people of Santa Cruz catch the tram, which is the only one on the island, up the hill to party.

Surly, in northern Tenerife, La Laguna wins the battle of the sisters. While Santa Cruz has the coast and the best parks. The mountains of Rural de Anaga Park are on La Laguna’s doorstep.

For tourists visiting Tenerife, I would recommend La Laguna as a cultural stop off on whatever type of holiday you may be planning.
